Clairo @ 9:30 Club [DC] 11/12/19

Clairo has come a long way from uploading songs recorded on her Macbook to YouTube. However, her raw and DIY style is still carried throughout all of her music and live performances. Her style clearly resonates with her devoted teenaged audience, as she has very quickly become the face of the Bedroom Pop genre in 2019.

Clairo and her band took the stage at the sold-out 9:30 Club on the 26th night of the Immunity Tour. Their setup was simple, featuring only a large half-circle screen behind them that played nature scenes and pastel colors throughout the set. Clairo opened with Alewife, a delicate song with a heavy subject matter. She quickly lifted the mood with “Impossible” and “Softly.” She performed every song off of her debut album Immunity and a few songs from her 2018 EP Diary 001, including “Flaming Hot Cheetos,” and “4EVER.” Other highlights include fans singing and dancing to the sugary chorus of “Sofia,” and the delightfully airy vocals in “North.”

Following “4EVER”, the crowd screamed with excitement as images of a younger Clairo dancing in her bedroom with headphones in appeared on the background screen, indicating the beginning of “Pretty Girl,” the song that launched her into popularity. She finished the night with her collaboration with Mura Masa, “I Don’t Think I Can Do This Again.”

Clairo is joined on tour by alternative rock band Hello Yello, and indie artist, Beabadoobee. Hello Yello’s dual single “My Life As A Teenage Robot” and Beabadoobee’s EP Loveworm are out now.
