The High Cost of Music Journalism

Over a decade of music journalism, we’ve heard it all: it's dying, it's dead, it's alive again, gatekeepers have the power, and poptimism ruined everything. But one thing has always been true—it’s a lot of work and takes a lot of time.

Consider This:

An average listener might explore 100 new albums a year. A music journalist? We listen to that amount 10 times over. We dive deep into context, influences, and cultural impact. Whether we blog, start a podcast, or get hired by big publications, all this work requires time and money.

The Costs:

  • Site Hosting/Domain: Around $40/month (Squarespace)

  • Remote Interview Platform: $10/month (Riverside.fm)

  • Audio Editing/Design Software: $59.99/month (Creative Cloud)

  • Time Investment:

    • Listening: 40 hours/month (minimum)

    • Recording & Editing: 5 hours/episode (10 hours/month)

    • Site Design: 200+ hours for redesign

    • Post creation: 1 hour

All that adds up to a little over $100 and between 50-60 hours of work EACH month.
