Starcrawler @ Pie Shop [DC] - 10/27/2019
Los Angeles's Starcrawler is putting on one of the most exciting live shows that you're not paying attention to...yet. In 2018 they won SXSW's Grulke Prize, an accolade given to the most promising musicians of the future whose previous winners were the likes of CHVRCHES, HAIM, and Anderson .Paak. Not exactly bad company to be in.
Singer Arrow De Wilde is a force to be reckoned with. We've documented her live antics in the past, but the biggest takeaway is this: if you're in the front row, prepare to be in the splash zone. De Wilde is not afraid to fuck with you. If your phone is out, she will poke it out of your hands. If she's drinking a vial of fake blood, get ready to be spit on. If you've got a beer in your hand, she might grab it. The furious guitar licks of Henri Cash are just as potent, and his relentless demeanor on songs like “Bet My Brains” combined with his frilly shirt makes for an entertaining performance.
As intimidating as the band can seem, they’re not all shock and awe. In fact, sometimes they’re shock and “awww.” During the song “Chicken Woman” Cash brought a young onlooker onto the stage to strum away at his guitar during the big rock ending - not a bad way to get the next generation of rock artists excited about their future.
Starcrawler's sophomore album Devour You is out now through Rough Trade Records.
Bowling Green-based Dan Luke & the Raid opened for Starcrawler. Their latest record Out of the Blue is out now through New West Records.
