Divino Niño @ DC9 [DC] - 09/17/21
From Bogotá to Miami to Chicago with love. With 2019’s Foam, childhood friends Camilo Medina and Javier Forero made a great bilingual indie psych-pop album with their friends, but their DC9 show proved that they’re ready to turn those high expectations on their head once more.
In-between all the woozy guitars and vocals from great Foam cuts like “Quiero” and “Coca Cola,” they performed new tracks that fully embrace their Latin American heritage for the better. “Drive” combines psych-pop, bachata, and hip-hop in a compelling way that could have only come from someone that has been immersed in two different musical cultures on two different continents. The group impressed with unreleased tracks like “Miami,” “Nos Soltamos,” and “Punk,” most of which brought Auto-Tune and trance-like electronic sounds to the forefront, not their guitars.
The moral of the story? Don’t pigeon-hole Divino Nino, because they’re going to consistently challenge your expectations of what a Colombian-American band can sound like.
