In today’s age of political rage, Bad Moves fights back with youthfully jubilant melodies anchored by darker lyrical themes, like religion and police brutality (“In the eyes of every cop, don’t it seem to say / ‘It’s criminal, it’s written in the code of your DNA.’”) The DC power pop band comprised of Emma Cleveland on bass, Katie Park on guitar, David Combs on guitar, and Daoud Tyler-Ameen on drums have been playing together since 2016, and have toured alongside the likes of Jeff Rosenstock and The Spook School. They even landed themselves on the Cartoon Network show Craig of the Creek, all before their debut album Tell No One was released. For fans of early Weezer (and even 80s groups like The Outfield), allow us to introduce you to your new playlist mainstay.
Their Black Cat Backstage show was completely sold-out, and for their hometown crowd, they played a few songs from their debut EP, like “Shitty Tomorrow” and probably their most well-known song (based on the number of people singing along), “The Verge.” But the new additions like “Spirit FM” and “Give It A Shot” are as peppy as anything they’ve put out, and their harmonies and joyous stage presence were infectious throughout their compact, but comprehensive (for now) set. Those that missed out on the sold-out show won’t have to wait long to see one of DC’s most talked about indie bands - they can join in the cathartic screaming and shouting at Comet Ping Pong on October 11 when they open for Nana Grizol alongside DC group BRNDA.
