Chicago’s Neal Francis owes a lot to musicians that came before him, and honors that in every note or shimmy across the stage. On his new record, In Plain Sight, he shares a lot of DNA with artists like Benny Sings or Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats. But let loose upon a stage on a Saturday night in Milwaukee the deeper roots of Dr. John, Traffic, and an entire history of psychedelic soul come rushing to the surface.

Garcia Peoples @ Colectivo Backroom [MKE] - 1/17/20
Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow – a LOT of snow – could keep the Garcia Peoples faithful from receiving their latest sermon Friday night in Milwaukee. Fresh of a residency at Nublu in New York City and a WILD triple bill to close out the decade, the sextet from New Jersey (along with a little help from opener/Milwaukee resident Kendra Amalie) braved the storm to deliver a tight and ferocious 90-minute set that highlighted their songwriting chops as much as it made room for the jams that their fans crave.

Rosenau & Sanborn @ Colectivo Back Room [MKE] - 8/9/19
Last month the duo of Chris Rosenau (Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir) and Nick Sanborn (Made Of Oak. Sylvan Esso) released Bluebird (listen to our review here), their improvised collaboration that is part studio wizardry and part magic. And on Friday night in Milwaukee they released the material into the wild in front of a live audience.
The date kicked off a short tour that stopped through Eaux Claires and Minneapolis for the first leg and will conclude in September with two stops: First at the tenth annual Hopscotch Music Festival and finally landing at the legendary Mothlight in Asheville, NC.
