Shura @ Union Stage [DC] - 10/18/2019
England’s Shura broke into the spotlight with her 2016 debut Nothing’s Real, an album chock full of catchy pop melodies like “White Light” and the title track that drew comparisons to early Madonna. Not a bad start. Her well-received follow-up forevher (whose album cover is a remake of sorts of Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss, but with two women depicted instead of the original’s man and woman) takes her synth-pop sound into new directions, with slow burns like “Skyline, Be Mine,” “BKLYNLDN,” and the funky “Religion (U Can Lay Your Hands On Me),” songs that seems to draw on more contemporary artists like Kimbra. The amount of couples swaying together and holding hands at Union Stage - men and women, women and women, men and men - was proof enough that Shura has a knack for love songs that anyone can relate to.
forevher is out now through Secretly Canadian.
