Miami Horror @ 9:30 Club [DC] - 11/29/19
The Australian-based Miami Horror is in the midst of a musical transformation. Since the last time they passed through 9:30 Club in support of 2015’s All Possible Futures, guitarist Joshua Moriarty took a break to focus on a solo album (and entertaining podcast), and guitarist/keyboardist Aaron Shanahan left after seven years to pursue a new musical project. Founding member Benjamin Plant (who initially used the name for his solo project) and keyboardist Daniel Whitechurch have remade the live band in a new image, bringing in Australian drummer Kosta Theodosis and American vocalists TC Milan and Reva DeVito.
As the lead vocalists, Milan and DeVito often switched it up on lead vocals, but they both matched the relentless energy that Moriarty brought to his performances (like the time when he climbed up to the 9:30 Club’s balcony and started dancing atop the second-floor bar). New songs “Restless” and “Luv is Not Enough” give a hint to the R&B/funk-infused direction that the band is heading. But the highlights of the night were the set closer “Sometimes” and an extended version of “Holidays,” both off of their 2010 debut album Illumination. Their 9:30 Club performance was the penultimate one of their North American tour before they return to the studio to finish recording their third album.
