Marc Rebillet @ The Anthem [DC] - 10/16/21

Marc Rebillet revels in the chaos of his loop station, and he’s gained an impressive following as a result, going from tip jars at Dallas breweries on a Sunday afternoon to a sold-out Anthem in Washington, D.C. in a handful of years. During the pandemic, Rebillet would often livestream from his apartment on Sundays, armed with his loop station, keyboards, and drum pads. He would always take song ideas from fans calling in from all over the world and make beats and vocals up on the fly for hours on end.

On Saturday night, shower robe-wearing fans (a tribute to Rebillet’s livestream garb of choice) filled the venue for an explosion of musical improvisation and wild stage antics. He invited fans on stage to dance and elicit some ideas for new songs - songs about human rights, hating zucchini, and bridesmaids, among others. One fan brought a fart machine and requested that Rebillet make a song with it. And because he embraces the chaos in everything he does, he took it on stage, improvised a massive flatulist jam, and lo, the masses rejoiced. (Speaking of chaos: there is nothing more chaotic than a fan-made puppet of Marc Rebillet having simulated puppet sex with Kermit the Frog, on stage in front of 6,000 screaming and laughing fans. Nothing.)

Of course, over the last few years, Rebillet’s weekly livestreams of improvised music have revealed a couple of viral favorites, such as “I’m a Flamingo,” “Work That Ass for Daddy,” and “Girl’s Club.” So while most of the set was dedicated to improvised songs, he ended his set with those fan favorites. It feels much more special watching him create something completely new on the fly than watching him re-create something he created on the fly in the past, but it all was still wildly entertaining and hilarious to witness in person. Rebillet’s gleefully hedonistic live show is not to be missed.

Opening for Marc Rebillet was DC-area rock group Dingleberry Dynasty.
