Kali Uchis @ 9:30 Club - 10/10/2018
Kali Uchis has been rising for years, and with the release of her eclectic debut album Isolation, she’s shining brighter than ever. A melting pot of genres ranging from R&B to funk to reggaeton, her music is a gateway to a getaway brimming with colorful scenery. With the weather in D.C. being chillier as of late, the “In Your Dreams” tour was perfect timing for Kali Uchis’ warm, breezy vocals and swagger to grace the 9:30 Club for two consecutive nights.
“YASS, baby girl!” could be heard throughout the set whenever Uchis nailed a beautiful note or gave the crowd a swing of her hips. Uchis fed off the countless voices of endearment from her hometown DMV crowd and delivered a beautiful show in return. Songs like “Dead to Me” and “Just A Stranger” stirred a groove in the 9:30 Club attendees and Uchis dreamy voice layered atop some upbeat production allowed for sing-along ease. “Miami” off Isolation transported fans down south, evoking the solace of joyriding under palm trees or chilling beachside without a care in the world.
The crowd erupted when Uchis performed her funky, uplifting single “After the Storm” in which her powerful sentiment “if you need a hero, just look in the mirror” rung off the walls. As a token of appreciation for the amount of love she received, the encore was an all-request affair in which Uchis performed “Ridin Round,” “Speed,” and “Teeth in My Neck” to cap off her set.
Gabriel Garzón-Montano opened up for Kali Uchis. His debut album Jardin was released in 2017 through Stones Throw Records.
