Jade Bird @ 9:30 Club [DC] - 9/28/2019
Jade Bird, who has been a supporting act for Hozier and Brandi Carlisle, and is finally back on a headlining tour of her own. Returning to the nation’s capital roughly one year after her knockout show at the Rock & Roll Hotel, the 22-year-old English Americana singer-songwriter has graduated to the “big room” and delivered an equally thrilling set at an early show at one of the nations most lauded venues, the 9:30 Club.
Bird was joined on a sparsely appointed stage by her three band members to open the evening with “Ruins” from her debut LP Jade Bird. Wearing a black metallic jumpsuit that glittered in the stage lights, she shredded on her signature white acoustic guitar on tracks “After “Ruins,” and “Uh Huh.” After playing every song from her debut and a few from her 2017 EP Something American for good measure, she treated the crowd to a brand new song “Anniversary,” as well as covers of Radiohead’s “Black Star” and Blondie’s “Call Me.” Her soft presence and gentle stage banter belie the raw power of her voice, and just like every show Bird plays, she had the crowd hanging on every note.
Bird is joined on tour by Flyte, an English Alternative Pop band. Flyte’s Will Taylor and Nicholas Hill opened the night with a short and intimate acoustic set. Bird later invited the duo up on stage to perform “17” with her. Flyte’s EP White Roses is out now from Island Records.
