Charli XCX @ 9:30 Club - 10/18/2019

Since the release of her 2016 EP Vroom Vroom, Charli XCX has continued to craft songs that challenge the definition of conventional Pop music. With the release of multiple mixtapes (Number 1 Angel, Pop 2) and her latest full-length Charli, she has built up a large community of collaborators and created a liberating party atmosphere around herself and her music.

Fans started lining up for Charli's show at The 9:30 Club as early as 2:30 AM in hopes of getting one of the meet-and-greet wristbands reserved for the first 50 in line, but even if you weren't one of those lucky few, everyone in attendance was rewarded with a remarkable night of music.

The evening began with a recording of the singer thanking all of the collaborators/features on Charli, dropping immediately into a raucous set that drew from all points of her career ("Vroom Vroom," "I Love It," and "Boys" were some choice highlights), that included an on-stage dance party (Charli invited some local performers to the stage to join her on the track "Shake It"), fans climbing onto each other shoulders, and Charli declaring "This is gay church!" (she is a noted supporter of the LGBTQ community) as the crowd sang the words to "I Got It" back to her.

Slayyyter opened for Charli's DC show, and it is safe to say that Charli fans are almost as enthusiastic about her as they are about Charli. Slayyyter joined Charli on stage to perform the No Boys Remix of "Click," which was released less than a week before the show. Slayyyter's self-titled album is out now.
