New Music From Midland, Nubya Garcia, Jane’s Addiction is done, and more.

Barely Blue
Midland

This Grammy-nominated songwriting trio from Texas may be on their fourth album since their 2017 debut On The Rocks (which featured the all-time Country classic “Drinking Problem”), but they still somehow feel like Nashville’s best-kept secret. After the rowdy fun of 2022’s The Last Resort: Greetings From, the band could have aimed for the stadium-ready Country music being made by many of their peers, and nobody would have been surprised. Instead, Barely Blue (produced by Dave Cobb) finds Jess Carson, Cameron Duddy, and Mark Wystrach taking a quick trip through the melancholy, '90s Country part of town. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, Barely Blue covers some familiar ground, but on tracks like “Lucky Sometimes” and the title track, Midland shows yet again why they are currently one of the best in the business. - Kevin

Odyssey
Nubya Garcia

On Nubya Garcia’s second album, the London-based saxophonist expands her sound beyond the dub/reggae vibes of her 2020 debut Source and the results are a jazz-classic in waiting. Spiritual jazz, sophisticated orchestral arrangements, and guest spots from the likes of Esperanza Spalding and Georgia Anne Muldrow, all make Odyssey a journey that rewards fans of her earlier work and invites newer fans to experience the seemingly unlimited range of one of jazz’s brightest up-and-comers. - Kevin
