Starting today, I’m kicking off a new project entitled Beams.
Over the past few years there has been a lot of discussion about how much “content” an artist should release, and on what kind of schedule. Some of that discourse has been…let’s say “problematic,” but that doesn’t change the fact that if you’re out here trying to make ANY money from your work, you actually have to put the work out. And while that holiest of holidays known as Bandcamp Fridays didn’t ask anyone to try and create new work every month, it’s generous waiving of the fees certainly encourages the practice.
So, for about half the last year I did just that. Composed, performed, recorded, and released a new project every month. And I found that I enjoyed the hell out of it.
To be clear, there are a handful of larger projects that I’m working on (The Lake and Dark River for example…) that require a lot more time, focus and inspiration. But there’s something about having a hard deadline to create something that is appealing. And fun. At least to me. And that’s the starting point/impetus for Beams.
Every month in 2023 the goal is to release a new track/tracks that began their life at the beginning of the month and made it into your ears on or before Bandcamp Friday the following month.
When I think of the idea of beams, I think of support. Smaller things underpinning some larger structure. So not only will all these pieces be part of some larger work, but the intent is to find ways for each piece to inform the other. I don’t know what the larger structure is yet. I have some ideas, but I expect those to change just as my experiences change throughout the year. That excites me. If you’re reading this it hopefully, at a minimum, intrigues you as well.
Oh…there’s one more thing: How YOU engage with this.
These tracks will come out monthly. And if you purchase ANY of the 11 tracks released before December then you will get the finished project, Beams, for free. And Beams won’t just be all of the prior tracks plus “Beams 12.” It will be those tracks shuffled around and “reworked” to make sense in the context of the whole.
So, in a nutshell:

· Resulting in the album Beams in December
