Press Release

VirgoTwins — the West-Coast-by-way-of-Chicago duo composed of MC Gilead7 and producer Boricua Sandy — announce their debut album, Artspace, out April 21st on Damn That Noise/Expanded-Art Records, and present its Carinoe-directed lead single/video, “Unspoken” (Feat. DJ Presyce). ArtSpace is a realm where creativity is never concluded but always malleable. The sonic imagination encapsulated in these ten potent and unique songs alludes to various interpretations and possibilities on how we can live in and think about the world more progressively. In lead single “Unspoken,” featuring DJ Presyce of the legendary Chicago collective The Molemen (and former Rhymesayers artist as a member of Mass Hysteria), Gilead floats esoteric bars atop Boricua Sandy’s atmospheric production. “Unspoken” describes two provocative and history-revealing visions of the ancestors providing essential wisdom: one with Noble Drew Ali (founder of the Moorish Science Temple of America), and the other being his paternal grandfather from Belize.

We know that opposite ends of magnets attract, and we are structured into the perspective that the universe as a whole functions in similar fashion, but we sometimes lose sight of the synergy bubbling between two humans who have almost everything in common. Enter VirgoTwins, the collaborative project of MC Gilead7 and producer Boricua Sandy. Both born in September and sharing a love for the essence of the Culture, the two met in the Southern California underground hip-hop scenes. After years of knowing each other peripherally, the duo conjoined in the span of a few months to create ArtSpace, an impactful record that mystically came together out of nowhere.

Boricua Sandy is no newcomer to the scene, known for her exceptional and tireless work in the San Diego underground. Her lush and intelligent instrumental production has seen two very well-received releases through FiveSe7ven Collective, namely her collaboration with J57, [beat tape], and with her most recent offering, Indigenous Goddess. Gilead is a member of the infamous Chicago Hip-Hop collective Tomorrow Kings, and has released a slew of internationally distributed and acclaimed projects. He currently serves as an assistant professor of philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, teaching Hip-Hop Culture as a global philosophy of life and social justice, and recently authored Underground Rap as Religion: A Theopoetic Examination of a Process Aesthetic Religion. With such deep diverse yet similar resumes, Boricua Sandy and Gilead7 are ready for the world to hear them unified as the VirgoTwins.

In the spirit of the introspective Virgo, ArtSpace is a ten-song meditation that returns us to the days of Atmosphere’s Overcast! and Sonic Sum’s The Sanity Annex, but with a unique VirgoTwins approach. Reminiscent of the early 2000s era of underground hip-hop while forging their own fluid identity in a sea of present-day artistic sameness, VirgoTwins have delivered the quintessential album of the shadows for all turntables in 2023.

For those in the Chicagoland area, VirgoTwins will celebrate the release of ArtSpace with a show at Golden Dagger on Friday, April 28th. Hosted by Awdazcate, the show will also feature performances from Lamon Manuel, Dai, Jason Gatz, Phantom Thrett, and UDABABY. Tickets are on-sale now here and also at goldendagger.com.
