Post Animal, FootsXColes, Martha Lights @ OTHERFEELS - 6/15/2017
Local DIY space OTHERFEELS brought a diverse set of bands to the Mount Pleasant rowhouse basement on Thursday night. First up was Martha Lights, a group based out of College Park, MD. The group combines vocals that are sometimes reminiscent of punk or emo music with guitars and melodies that are more M83-like and lush in instrumentation. Their latest release is “The Basement (Pts. 1 & 2)” and is available on Bandcamp.
Next up at OTHERFEELS was NY-based psych-punk band Post Animal. The six-piece band played rock music that draws comparisons to Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles and Tame Impala. The band heated up the already-sweltering basement with synths straight from the next astral plane and three in-your-face, effect-heavy guitars that demanded at least some headbanging in the crowd. Their latest release is the 2017 single “Special Moment,” available on Bandcamp and other streaming services.
Closing out the night was local R&B band FootsXColes, made up of the production duo of Foots on drums and Coles on keyboard (aided live by a second keyboard player). They grabbed the audience’s attention with with a smooth blend of spoken word and songs about love and lust. Their set largely consisted of songs from their 2016 debut album A Beautiful Mistake, including a sing-along on album cut “Sin,” but they also performed a cover of Kanye West’s “Paranoid” for good measure. The production quality of their show signals good things for them as they continue to spread their music beyond the confines of the OTHERFEELS basement.
