Tyler, the Creator @ The Anthem - 2/25/2018
In 2017, about five years post peak Odd Future mania, the collective’s frontman Tyler, the Creator released an album titled Flower Boy. At first glance, the title itself signals a complete departure from the content of his previous records titled Goblin, Wolf, and Cherry Bomb. Once notoriously known for the obnoxity surrounding his music and antics, Tyler has displayed significant character growth, no longer receiving bans from countries like the U.K. However, Tyler’s colorful personality is still apparent, and he was more than ready to let loose in support of his most polished and commercially successful album to date. The milestone rewarded him a sold-out Anthem venue of 6,000 people consisting of day-one die hard stans and new fans.
“Foreword,” a song in which Tyler asks himself a plethora of self-reflecting questions served as the first track in the setlist. The real question was how much more visually appealing could an artist create his/her set? The crowd was introduced to a starry backdrop in a tropical environment, a spectacle to say the least. Tyler stood atop of a fallen tree branch prior proceeding downstage in his neon green outfit which was complemented extremely well by against the ultraviolet lighting used. Tyler nearly performed Flower Boy in its entirety except for its outro song. Most of the album itself is a bundle of inclusive and relatable content that's paired with lush production (all done by Tyler himself) which is perfect for concert-goers. Songs such as “911 / Mr. Lonely”, “November”, “Glitter”, and his biggest hit to date “See You Again” were able to unify the venue in a sing-along frenzy.
Tyler performed “Who Dat Boy” and “Ain’t Got Time” are the two bangers featured on his latest release which proved the chaotic energy reminiscent of Tyler’s former work is still present but completely refined. The Odd Future faithful were able to mosh pit in euphoria. Tyler also made sure to reach back into his catalog to treat the Odd Future faithful to include “She,” “Sandwitches,” “IFHY,” “Yonkers,” “48,” and “Tamale.” The latter song was birthed by Tyler as a result of his disgust for people not moving to his songs during his 2012 tour overseas. “Tamale” was one of the many songs that night which caused the Anthem’s floor to rumble due to the hysteria that ensued amongst the crowd. Tyler has indeed set the bar high with Flower Boy and its accompanying concert performance, satisfying his faithful and ever-growing fanbase.
Vince Staples displayed a strong performance before Tyler, the Creator consisting of alternating angelic white lights and smoke. Vince’s onstage presence is impressive, combined with sporting an all-black outfit and bulletproof vest which commands attention. Blue Fish Theory is in stores now.
