Drew Beckman & the Boundary Boys @ DC9 [DC] - 10/2/2019
DC’s self-described ‘queer cowboy’ Drew Beckman has made a name for himself in the local music scene. Having decided to pursue music very recently in 2016, he formed his band The Boundary Boys through the popular open mic night at Bloomingdale’s Boundary Stone. In speaking with The Washington Post, Beckman explains the unique perspective he writes from in his music.
“All of the songs for Drew Beckman and the Boundary Boys are written from the perspective of a queer cowboy living in the 1800s,” Beckman says. “I think the cowboy is the perfect metaphor for the queer experience. It’s lonely and isolating. . . . Throughout most of American history, if you were a queer person, you were guaranteed a lonely, difficult, hard, sad life. And if you dared to express your feelings or present yourself in an authentic way, your life was on the line.”
The large crowd in attendance at DC9 was proof that he and his band continue to win over the masses wherever they go. Their unique combination of on-stage charisma, unique writing perspective, and a great outlaw country sound makes them a standout group in the DMV music scene. Their latest release is the single “Colorado” with their debut EP on the way by the end of the year.
