In 2019, Clairo’s album Immunity made her a Gen Z face of DIY bedroom pop. She is currently touring for her sophomore album, Sling, which was heavily inspired by 70s-era singer-songwriters and feels much more mature and refined. Clairo’s show at the Fillmore Silver Spring sold out so quickly they had to add a second date.
The stage was set up with paper lanterns and mid-century modern style lamps. An eclectic lineup of watercolor GIFs played on a screen in the background for each song. Clairo was joined by a larger six-piece band to accommodate the instrumental intricacies on Sling, which was co-produced by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. Her band also added some new embellishments to the more stripped-down songs from her early catalog.
She took the stage in an elegant pantsuit and started the show with the album opener, “Bambi,” a gentle piano ballad that fans knew every word to. She played through the entirety of Sling and also sprinkled in a few songs from Immunity. Even though the show was sold-out, Clairo’s soft and charming aura made the room feel very intimate. She often took breaks in between songs to chat with adoring fans in the front row. Highlights included a groovy guitar solo and jam session during the outro of “Zinnias” and the performance of a brand new song called “Nomad.” She closed out the night with an encore of two of her beloved classics, “Sofia” and “Pretty Girl.”
London-based R&B artist and poet, Arlo Parks, is joining Clairo on Tour. She delivered a warm and dreamy set that consisted mostly of songs from her debut album, Collapsed In Sunbeams, including “Green Eyes” a song she co-wrote with Clairo. Arlo Parks’s latest single, “Softly,” as well as Collapsed in Sunbeams, is out now via Transgressive Records.
