CHVRCHES @ Anthem [DC] - 11/31/21
CHVRCHES is back on tour for their 4th studio album, Screen Violence. Their new era puts an 80’s horror movie twist on their signature bright synth-pop style. Just after Thanksgiving, CHVRCHES brought the Screen Violence Tour to a packed crowd at The Anthem.
The Scottish trio made up of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty took the stage in front of a giant LED screen. The screen featured an array of glitch graphics that complimented their insane light show. Mayberry grabbed the mic and started across the stage before diving into the album’s lead single, “He Said She Said.”
They performed a 17 song setlist that featured hits across their entire discography. Highlights include a very intense and visually overstimulating rendition of “Science/Vision,” and “Good Girls,” which was an explosion of shiny multi-textural synths and featured an energetic guitar solo from Doherty. After “Night Sky,” Mayberry changed into a T-shirt with the words “Final Girl” on it, reflecting the idea of her being the final girl alive in a horror movie. After “Never Say Die,” they briefly left the stage and returned for an encore of 3 of their biggest songs “Asking for a Friend,” “The Mother We Share,” and “Clearest Blue.” This time, Mayberry was covered in fake blood.
Donna Missal is opening for the Screen Violence Tour. She is a singer and songwriter from New Jersey with a powerful voice and unique style that merges pop and rock. She delivered a set that showed impressive power and control over her wide vocal range. Missal’s latest album, Lighter, is out now via Harvest Records.
