Best of 2016 LIVE - Mauricio's Take
The best kinds of shows are the ones that you can connect with on an emotional level. These are the ten that I connected with the most. Some were complete surprises, others were just as great as I envisioned it would be. Because it’s 2016 and we’re in the midst of the War on Attention Spans, I present to you my 10 favorite concerts...in haiku.
10) OF MONTREAL
Weird costumes and songs?
You may think it’s a gimmick /
But it’s the appeal.
9) JULIEN BAKER
The place was silent /
Except for Julien’s voice /
Feels were felt that night.
8) SOFI TUKKER
Unique lyrics /
And unique influences/
Creates unique sounds.
7) SYLVAN ESSO
Amelia Meath /
Your voice and dance moves are sweet
How are you so cool?
6) DIANE COFFEE
A great throwback voice/
And the swagger of Bowie /
What a happy dude.
5) RÜFÜS DU SOL
Tired of DJs?
EDM, reimagined /
The future? Maybe.
4) KINGSLEY FLOOD
Furious fire
And relentless energy
See them live ASAP.
4) Ripe / Lawrence
If you want to dance /
These two have got you covered /
Funk and soul? Yes, please!
2) GALLANT
Soulful falsettos /
An emotional presence /
Watch out for this guy.
1) AURORA
Her powerful songs /
And youthful exuberance /
Makes her a must-see.

BONUS ROUND! Shows I didn’t cover for ChunkyGlasses:
- LCD Soundsystem for putting on a show that all festival closers should aspire to.
- Mayer Hawthorne for his smooth moves and soulful cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”
- Charles Bradley, because nobody conveys anguish and hope at his age better than him
