All Things Go Fall Classic 2018 @ Union Market - 10/6/2018 - 10/7/2018
Another All Things Go Fall Classic has come and gone. The festival has gone through multiple curation and venue changes in the past (like separating last year's acts by genre - EDM on Friday, hip-hop/R&B on Saturday, and synth-pop on Sunday), but the fifth iteration of the festival has brought the most needed change: musicians LPX (Lizzy Plapinger of MS MR, a friend of the ATG founders) and music star in the making Maggie Rogers curated a lineup that defied the trend of male-heavy festival billings. In fact, Saturday's lineup was made up entirely of female/non-binary artists, and Sunday's lineup featured a nearly 50/50 split.
Some notable highlights included:
Billie Eilish
At only 16 years old and still no debut album out, Eilish has already become an influential figure to her peers (i.e. her 6 million Instagram followers). You could tell as much from all the orange beanies and neon green sweatshirts being worn by her fans on this warm Saturday. Eilish has channeled teenage angst through her dark, brooding pop music and has captured the hearts and minds of countless many. Whenever she commanded the crowd to jump, they did so with reckless abandon. Remind us not to mess with her in case she ever decides to incite an uprising.
Cautious Clay
The multi-talented musician gave the smoothest performance of the two-day billing. His blend of R&B, soul, and funk through his use of the ukulele, guitar, saxophone, and even the flute left an indelible mark on the festival crowd.
Carly Rae Jepsen
Though she wasn’t the original Sunday night headliner, it’s hard to imagine anyone capping off the weekend any better than Jepsen did. Years removed from the “Call Me Maybe” days, Jepsen has lately been working with the likes of Dev Hynes of Blood Orange and Rostam Batmanglij to create pop music that crosses mainstream and indie boundaries. One intrepid fan ensured that their inflatable sword made it on stage, fulfilling DC’s role in continuing the “Give Carly Rae Jepsen a sword” meme.
